DESCRIPTION

How was this design brought about?

My husband was on a 3 hour flight with no video/internet access and just my ipad I use to sketch out ideas. He decided to sketch out several “joke” ideas for me.

I randomly found the sketches several weeks later, so the “Guess What?” “Chicken Butt” sketch, and thought “actually, that one isn’t half bad”.

This free crochet pattern uses tapestry and intarsia crochet techniques to create the lettering and graphic, and a full YouTube video tutorial is included.

Whether you’re trying colorwork for the first time or you’re already comfortable with tapestry crochet, you’ll have everything you need to make this hilarious pillow from start to finish.

2 charts are included in the design so you can easily follow along with the chart, which is how most people find it easiest to do crochet colorwork for tapestry and intarsia crochet.

YARN

The yarn used for the Chicken Butt Pillow is Lion Brand Yarn Heartland yarn.

Lion Brand Heartland is a soft, acrylic yarn that is known for its smooth texture and subtle heathered appearance.

I chose this yarn because of the wide range of colors offered. I needed specific shades to get the colors to pop against one another for this project, which is really important for intarsia and tapestry crochet. If the hues are too similar, you won’t be able to make out the details.

Heartland yarn has 35 colors, and is an easy-to-care for yarn. The yarn is machine washable and dryable.

DIFFICULTY

The Chicken Butt Pillow is considered a Level 3 – Intermediate pattern.

The pillow uses very simple stitches and comes with a full video tutorial to aid you in making it.

The pillow is made using a combination of intarsia and tapestry crochet techniques. Do not let the fancy names intimidate you, though.

If you know how to change colors mid row, you will be able to complete this project. And if you need a little extra help doing this, watch this video HERE.

I have supplemental tips/tricks to help make the color transitions look extra clean, but if you find that too hard, do not stress about it.

FAQ

Is this pattern good for beginners?

If you are comfortable with changing colors mid-row, the Chicken Butt Pillow will not be as hard as a traditional “Intermediate” crochet pattern.

Can I use a different yarn?

Yes, but the gauge of the pillow may be affected, so do a gauge swatch so you can meet gauge.

What if my gauge is off?

Too many stitches in a 4″x4″ swatch?

→ The fabric is too tight, so you need to go up a hook size.

Too few stitches in a 4″ x 4″ swatch?

→ The fabric is too loose, so you need to go down a hook size.

Each row of the chart alternates between right to left/left to right. The right-hand side of the chart has odd numbers (RS) and the left side has even numbers (WS).

Every block of the chart represents 1 sc.
The ch 1 does not count as a st.

Step 1: Hold Front and Back with RS together. You may want to pin Front and Back together to match panels up.

Step 2: Using the MC, *sc around first edge, ch 1 at corner*, rep for 3 sides leaving one side of the pillow open.

Step 3: Flip pillow RS out.

Step 4: Insert pillow.

Step 5: Whip st rem side closed. You may want to pin Front and Back together.

Fasten off. Weave in yarn ends.
