YARN
The yarn used for the Simple Scallop Scarf is Lion Brand Yarn Feels Like Butta Thick & Quick yarn.
Feels Like Butta Thick & Quick yarn is a super bulky weight 6 yarn that is velvety-soft and feels like butter when worked up.
It is a 100% polyester yarn with a chainette construction.
There’s 55 yards/50 meters per 3.5 oz/100 grams.
The yarn is machine washable and lay flat to dry.
I found that it works best to block this yarn with a steamer rather than wet blocking it.
There are 8 colors in the Feels Like Butta Thick & Quick yarn line ranging from off-white, muted rose, olive, and deep plum.
I used Antique White for the base of the scarf and Orion Blue for the scallop border.
It was hard to choose which color to use the for the scallop border, though.
I think “Willow” (muted cool green), “Woodrose” (muted cool pink-purple), and “Vineyard Wine” (deep plum), would all look beautiful as the complimentary color.

DIFFICULTY
The Simple Scallop Scarf is considered a Level 2 – Easy pattern, which is good for a confident beginner. I also included a full video tutorial to make it approachable for all!
The majority of the pattern is worked in rows of herringbone half double crochet, which is a fun twist for a regular half double crochet.
Instead of having 3 loops on your hook like a normal half double crochet, you pull through the first loop after inserting your hook in the stitch and yarning over.
This creates a slightly slanted stitch that makes the fabric look woven or herringbone.
Herringbone Half Double Crochet lies flatter than traditional half double crochet, so it has great drape and works well with super bulky yarn.
The scallop border is made using traditional half double crochets into the same stitch and slip stitches.
The contrasting border than uses slip stitches to arch around the scallops and highlight them.

FAQ
Is this pattern good for beginners?
Yes, this pattern is good for confident beginners. With the full video tutorial, you will be able to pause, rewind, and rewatch any sections.
The herringbone half double crochet may be a stitch you haven’t seen before, but it is a simple stitch once you practice the slight variation from the traditional half double crochet.
Can I use a different yarn?
Yes, but the gauge of the scarf will be affected, so it may turn out longer/shorter or wider/skinnier.
When a gauge does not meet the pattern, it also affects how much yardage is used, so you may need more/less skeins.
I am having trouble finding a US P/11.5 mm crochet hook. Can I use a different hook size?
Yes, but using a different hook size may affect the gauge, which could make the scarf bigger/smaller and also mean you need more/less yarn.
For this scarf design, gauge does not drastically matter, so you will probably be fine using a different hook if you cannot find a US P/11.5 mm hook or if your US P hook is not an 11.5 mm (why are there so many variations of US P hooks?)
Can I sell items from this crochet pattern?

What if my gauge is off?
Too many stitches in a 4″x4″ swatch?
→ The fabric is too tight, so you need to go up a hook size.
Too few stitches in a 4″ x 4″ swatch?
→ The fabric is too loose, so you need to go down a hook size.

SCARF
Using A, ch 8
Row 1 (WS): hhdc in 2nd ch from hook, hhdc across, turn (7 sts)
Rows 2-74: ch 1, hhdc across, turn (do not turn on the last row)
Do not fasten off.
SCALLOP BORDER
With yarn still connected, rotate work, and working down the long edge,
Rnd 1 (RS): ch 1, loosely sl st into next 2 row ends, *3 hdc in next ch 1 space, loosely sl st into next 2 row ends, rep from * on side edges of scarf. At scarf top/bottom, sl st in each hhdc/beginning ch. At corners, place 1 sl st. This will create a curve instead of a sharp corner, which is what we want, sl st to join
Fasten off A. Weave in ends.
SLIP STITCH BORDER
Using B,
Rnd 1 (RS): sl st to join, work loose sl sts around border by:
Long edges: placing 1 sl st in each sl st (working through blo of sl st and a second loop to anchor the st, and 1 sl st in each hdc,
Short edges: placing 1 sl st through both loops
Sl st to join.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
