DESCRIPTION

The Piped Scallop Scarf is an easy, quick-knit project made with super bulky weight 6 yarn.

Make one rights and make one lefts are used for the increases, and slip, slip, knit and knit 2 together are used for the decreases. This is what is used to increase and decrease for the scallops edges.

Worked in classic garter stitch, it’s finished with a contrasting applied i-cord border that creates a clean, modern edge and makes the scallops pop.

The border is then grafted closed, and I have a full video tutorial to show you how to do that.

This reversible scarf is designed to be long and versatile—wear it draped over the shoulders, wrapped once around the neck, or double wrapped for extra warmth.

YARN

The yarn used for the Piped Scallop Scarf is Lion Brand Yarn Feels Like Butta Thick & Quick yarn.

Feels Like Butta Thick & Quick yarn is a super bulky weight 6 yarn that is velvety-soft and feels like butter when worked up.

It is a 100% polyester yarn with a chainette construction.

There’s 55 yards/50 meters per 3.5 oz/100 grams.

The yarn is machine washable and lay flat to dry.

I found that it works best to block this yarn with a steamer rather than wet blocking it.

There are 8 colors in the Feels Like Butta Thick & Quick yarn line ranging from off-white, muted rose, olive, and deep plum.

I used Quiet Gray for the base of the scarf and Peach Blush for the scallop border.

It was hard to choose which color to use the for the scallop border, though.

I think “Willow” (muted cool green), “Woodrose” (muted cool pink-purple), and “Vineyard Wine” (deep plum), would all look beautiful as the complimentary color.

DIFFICULTY

The Piped Scallop Scarf is considered a Level 2 – Easy pattern, which is good for a confident beginner. I also included a full video tutorial to make it approachable for all!

The majority of the pattern is worked in decrease/increase rows of garter stitch.

M1R is an knit increase stitch that slants right and M1L slants left. Both will be used for the 4 increase rows. You can watch a video HERE if you want a more detailed explanation of how to do these increases.

SSK is a knit decrease stitch that slants left and k2tog slants right.

These decrease stitches will be down for 4 rows to curve the scallop smaller.

The pattern uses a 14 row repeat. 4 rows of increases, 3 rows of knitting, 4 rows of decreases, and 3 rows of knitting.

The icord border is added at the end with the contrasting color using the double pointed needles and an Applied Icord Method.

The border is then grafted closed for a clean finish, but don’t let that scare you. There’s only 2 stitches, so it is very simple.

FAQ

Is this pattern good for beginners?

Yes, this pattern is good for confident beginners. With the full video tutorial, you will be able to pause, rewind, and rewatch any sections.

There are 2 different increases and 2 different decreases, but these stitches are regularly used throughout knitting, so with a bit of practice, you’ll be able to do the repeat.

Grafting can seem intimidating, but there are only 2 stitches to graft closed, so there aren’t that many movements. Pause the video and rewind if needed.

Can I use a different yarn?

Yes, but the gauge of the scarf will be affected, so it may turn out longer/shorter or wider/skinnier.

When a gauge does not meet the pattern, it also affects how much yardage is used, so you may need more/less skeins.

I am having trouble finding US 17/12 mm knitting needles. Can I use a different needle size?

Yes, but using a different needle size may affect the gauge, which could make the scarf bigger/smaller and also mean you need more/less yarn.

For this scarf design, gauge does not drastically matter, so you will probably be fine using a different hook if you cannot find US 17/12 mm needles or if your US 17 needles is not an 12 mm (why are there so many variations of US 17 needles?)

What if my gauge is off?

Too many stitches in a 4″x4″ swatch?

→ The fabric is too tight, so you need to go up a needle size.

Too few stitches in a 4″ x 4″ swatch?

→ The fabric is too loose, so you need to go down a needle size.

- 195 yds/4 balls of Lion Brand Yarn Feels Like Butta Thick & Quick yarn, “Quiet Gray” (155-149AL), weight 6, 100% polyester, 55 yds/50 m, 3.5 oz/100 g (A)

- US 17/12.0 mm knitting needles
- US 15/10.0 mm double pointed knitting needles

NOTES

You will be working the scarf in one color, and then adding the contrasting icord border at the end.
You will be picking up sts for the border. Be sure not to pick up too few/many as it will ripple the scarf.
Graft the ending Applied Icord sts to the beginning Applied Icord sts.
Block the scarf using a steamer as steam works best on polyester yarn.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Increase Sts:

M1R – watch video HERE

Pick up the strand between the 2 sts with the left needle from the back to the front
Insert the tip of the right needle knitwise into the front leg of the strand and knit as usual

M1L –

Pick up the strand between the 2 sts with the left needle from the front to the back
Knit through the back loop

Decrease Sts:

ssk –

Slip 1 st knitwise, slip the next st knitwise
Insert left needle into fronts of those two sts
Knit them together through the back loops

k2tog –

Insert right needle into 2 sts knitwise
Knit them together

With 2 CO sts on right needle, pick up a st from the side of the scarf edge onto the right needle, slide sts down DPN, k1, k2tog tbl

APPLIED ICORDS

Using size 15/10.0 mm DPNs and B, CO 2 sts

Step 1: with 2 CO sts on right needle, pick up a st from the side of scarf onto the right needle, slide sts down DPN, k1 , k2tog tbl.

Step 2: pick up 1 st along edge, slide sts down DPN, k1, k2tog tbl
Pick up 2 sts for every 3 row ends and 1 st for every st along short edges.

Rep Step 2 for entire side. Rep on all sides.

Grafting

Step 1: With yarn still connected, cut 12”/30 cm tail. Thread tapestry needle and insert it through the scarf edge from left to right so tail is over on right side of scarf.

Step 2: Insert tapestry needle through first st on DPN purlwise and slide off DPN.

Step 3: Finding corresponding st on beginning sts made, go through both legs of the first st made from right to left.

Step 4: Go through left leg from right to left knitwise of st worked in Step 2 of Grafting.

Rep Steps 1-3.

Fasten off. Weave in ends.
