The Milo Blanket is a beginner crochet pattern uses yarn held double-stranded, so it works up quickly.
The vertical woven stripes are added after the blanket is crocheted, creating a beautiful plaid effect without the hassle of traditional plaid colorwork.
Featuring a textured crochet stitch, it includes a full video tutorial for this easy-rated blanket and comes in three sizes—baby, lapghan, and throw.
DESCRIPTION
The Milo blanket is made with yarn held double stranded, so it is a cozy, quick blanket.
It begins with one row of half double crochet, and then next two rows begin the repeat for the blanket.
Front and back post double crochets are used throughout the majority of the blanket, so there is some beautiful texture throughout the blanket.
The horizontal stripes are made by changing colors in the body of the blanket, but the vertical plaid stripes are woven/sewn in at the end.
The alternating front and back posts make it easy to see where to sew the vertical plaid stripes, so don’t be intimidated by this. The vertical plaid stripes are added in ten minutes or less!
The excess strands from the woven vertical plaid are tied off to create fun tassels along the bottom and top edges.
Leave them like that, or add fringe along the top and bottom to blend in the tassels.
YARN
I used Lion Brand Wool Ease DK yarn for this blanket, and I love working with Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK yarn. This is the third project I’ve made with WEDK, and I’m always impressed.
Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK yarn is 80% acrylic and 20% wool. It is a lightweight, versatile yarn that blends the warmth of wool with the softness and easy care of acrylic. It offers great stitch definition and drape while remaining machine washable and durable.
There’s 232 yards (212 meters) per 85 gram skein for this weight 3 yarn. It has a wide range of colors making it a favorite for projects that need to be both practical and cozy.
There are 18 colors in the Wool-Ease DK yarn line. I chose the color “Cream” and “Taupe” for the Milo Blanket, but I had trouble choosing.
I also made a sister knit blanket pattern to the Milo Blanket. It is called the Maxwell Blanket. I used “Olive” and “Navy” for this knit blanket, and I love how the colors pair together.

DIFFICULTY
The Milo Blanket is considered a Level 2 Easy crochet pattern, but it is good for all skill levels.
There is no seaming for this plaid blanket, which is really nice.
Front Post and Back Post double crochets are used throughout the majority of the blanket, and the plaid is added by weaving it through the double crochet spaces after making the blanket.

Baby – 30.5″ x 33.25″
Lapghan – 37.5″ x 44.5″

NOTES
- Pattern is written for 3 sizes: Baby (Lapghan, Throw). Highlight your size throughout the pattern to avoid confusion. Pictures are shown in the Lapghan size.
- You will be crocheting with 2 strands at a time for double thickness.
- The beginning ch 1 does not count as a st
- The vertical plaid contrasting stripes are sewn/woven in at the end.
- The blanket is made double sided, so there is no right or wrong side.

Row 3: ch 1, sc 1, *BPdc, FPdc, rep from * across to last st, sc 1, turn
Rows 4-9 (7, 9): rep Rows 2 & 3
Fasten off A, using two strands held together of B,
Rows 10 (8, 10)-11 (9, 11): rep Rows 2 & 3
Fasten off B, using two strands held together of A,

For the Baby size, rep these steps between sts 13 & 14, 36 & 37, 38 & 39, and 63 & 64
For the Lapghan size, rep these steps between sts 17 & 18, 45 & 46, 47 & 48, and 77 & 78
For the Throw size, rep these steps between sts 21 & 22, 53 & 54, 55 & 56, and 89 & 90
Step 1: cut 4 strands of yarn twice the length of the blanket
Step 2: on RS, using a tapestry needle, 4 strands of yarn, and starting at bottom edge, go up (back to front) into space between the sts in the first row, down (front to back) into space between the sts in the next row
Step 3: rep Step 2 until reaching the top edge
Step 4: knot strands on both edges to make a tassel
ALTERNATING WOVEN PLAID
For the Baby size, rep these steps between sts 37 & 38 and 39 & 40
For the Lapghan size, rep these steps between sts 46 & 47 and 48 & 49
For the Throw size, rep these steps between sts 54 & 55 and 56 & 57
Step 1: cut 4 strands of yarn twice the length of the blanket
Step 2: on RS, using a tapestry needle, 4 strands of yarn, and starting at bottom edge, go down (front to back) into space between the sts in the first row, up (back to front) into space between the sts in the next row
Step 3: rep Step 2 until reaching the top edge
Step 4: knot strands on both edges to make a tassel
