Free Knitting Pattern: Luxe Coatigan (Coat + Cardigan with Faux Fur Trim)

The Luxe Coatigan is worked from the top down with no seaming, making it easy to try on as you go. The faux fur sections are alternated with the two yarns, so that all increases/decreases are worked in Pound of Love making it easy to see your stitches and not drop or add a stitch. A belt and a folded hem along the bottom gives it a polished finish and helpful video aids are included.

The Luxe Coatigan is the perfect statement piece to wear as a night out to the movies, on a date, or for those Holiday get togethers.

DESCRIPTION

The Luxe Coatigan is made from the top down with no seams. It begins by working back and forth in rows to create the collar so the edge doesn’t curl, and then the yoke is worked with 5 increases spaced evenly throughout.

When the faux fur yoke portion is done, the yoke is continued with just Pound of Love yarn for the majority and Shaggy Chic on the inner edge of the body.

The sleeves are put on hold and the main body is worked first. A folded hem is used for the bottom of the coat to give it a clean, professional finish.

Sleeves can be worked in magic loop (what I used!) or with double pointed needles. Whichever you prefer. The cuff of the sleeves are worked by alternating Shaggy Chic and Pound of Love yarn, which creates a faux fur cuff (you can’t even see the Pound of Love rows, but it adds length without it becoming too heavy).

A belt is made with simple garter stitch and Icord Edging for a neat, sturdy finish.

No seams are needed for this coatigan because the sleeve stitches are put on hold and then picked up later.

YARN

For this pattern, I used 2 different kids of yarn – Pound of Love and Haute Stitches Shaggy Chic.

Haute Stitches Shaggy Chic yarn is a weight 7 yarn with 35 yards (32 meters) per 7 oz (200 grams). It is 100% polyester, and creates a very fun, eye-catching yarn to work with.

There are 12 colors in the Haute Stitches Shaggy Chic yarn line. I chose the color Blueberry for the Luxe Coatigan, but I had trouble choosing. I think there are a lot of pairings of Pound of Love and Shaggy Chic that would look so cute together!

Pound of Love yarn is a classic, for a good bang for your buck with how much yardage you get per skein.

There are 32 colors in the Pound of Love yarn line. Pound of Love yarn is a classic that is 100% acrylic and dependable when looking for a lot of different yarn shade choices.

I chose Pound of Love because I knew I could find a shade that would match the Shaggy Chic “Blueberry” well.

Each skein has 1020 yards (932 meters) per 16 oz (454 grams).

The skeins are usually around $12 each, which is nice because that’s a lot of yarn for that price.

Plus, it means less tails to weave in because you’re not having to add additional skeins for the coatigan. One continuous strand of yarn.

If I made another Luxe Coatigan, I think I would make it in a rich brown color. I love how Pound of Love in the color “Chocolate” and Haute Stitches in the color “Mocha” look together.

So rich, and luxe-looking!

Brown is the color of the year for 2025, and these two paired together are the perfect Pantone shade.

I also think it would be fun to do two colors that pair well together but aren’t exact shades.

“Bubblegum Pink” and “Sugar Cookie” would look so pretty together!

I think the neutral beige of Sugar Cookie would let the light pink Shaggy Chic shine and steal the show.

It would be so pretty.

DIFFICULTY

The Luxe Coatigan is considered a Level 2 – Easy pattern.

It can be challenging to see your stitches when working with faux fur yarn, but I found a solution to help with that!

The pattern alternates two rows of Pound of Love and then two rows of Shaggy Chic. The increases/decreases are done on the Pound of Love rows, so you can make sure that you don’t drop any of your stitches or add too many when you can easily see your stitches with Pound of Love yarn.

There is also no seaming for this coatigan, which is really nice.

It is made top-down, so you can try the coat on as you go, which is always a bonus to get the right fit.

Reverse stockinette stitch is used for the Pound of Love yarn sections, so it creates a more durable, coat-like stitch.

SIZE

There are 9 sizes included in the Luxe Coatigan: xs, s, m, l, xl, 2x, 3x, 4x, and 5x. The model is wearing a size medium and she is 5’7″/167.5 cm with a 38″/95 cm bust.

In the size medium there is 7.5″/19 cm positive ease, but the ease range is 6.5-7.75″/16.5-19 cm positive ease for the 9 sizes.

NOTES

Pattern is written for 9 sizes: XS (S, M, L, XL, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X). Highlight your size throughout the pattern for less confusion.
Model is 5’7”/167.5 cm and is wearing size Medium with a 38”/95 cm bust and 7.5”/19 cm positive ease.
Cardigan is worked top down, splitting for the sleeves. Sleeves are then worked in the round.
M1R is used for increases when the fur hides the fabric. LLI is used when only A is used so that the M1R will not be seen on the reverse stockinette.

Left Front and Right Front refers to when coat is worn.
Garter stitch is used for the collar and cuffs, and reverse stockinette is used for the main body of the coat.
2 rows using A and 2 rows using B are alternated for the top portion of the collar/yoke, the cuffs of sleeves, and the beg/end of rows worked in the main body. Drop the color not in use and pick it back up after the 2 rows. You cannot see the carry because of the shaggy yarn.
The belt is made using an icord edging.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Make One Right (M1R) –

pick up the strand between the 2 sts with the left needle from the back to the front
Insert the tip of the right needle knitwise into the front leg of the strand and knit as usual

Left Lifted Increase (LLI) –

Insert needle into st 2 rows below from the back
Pick up the left leg of that st onto your left needle
Knit through the back loop

Slip Knit Pass (SKP) –

Slip one stitch knitwise onto your right needle
Knit the next stitch as normal
Pass the stitch you slipped over the one you just knitted
