Have you ever wanted to start a knit project with a perfectly closed circle? Judy's Magic Cast-On (JMCO) is the answer! This method creates an invisible cast on that has a perfectly closed edge.
In this post, I’ll walk you through the Judy’s Magic Cast-On process step-by-step with pictures and full video, so you can master this essential knitting skill!
WHAT IS JUDY’S MAGIC CAST-ON?
Judy’s Magic Cast-On is a double-sided cast-on that uses two needles (or a circular needle) and both sides of the yarn to create live stitches on the top and bottom of your work.
It’s perfect for:
Toe-up socks
Seamless mittens or gloves
Top-down hats
Bags
Toys
Baskets
I used it for my Ruffle Basket because the knit basket is made from the bottom up.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
Circular needles – typically ones that allow the yarn to glide is best
Yarn
Tapestry needle
HOW TO DO JUDY’S MAGIC CAST-ON:
Step 1: Set Up
Hold your needles parallel in your right hand.
The tail yarn should be above on index finger.
The working yarn should be below on thumb.
Twist the yarn around the top needle to create a full loop on the needle.
Step 2: Wrap for the First Stitch on Bottom Needle
Bring the bottom needle over the yarn on index finger and create your first loop on the bottom needle.
Now you have one stitch on each needle — and this alternating pattern continues.
Step 3: Wrap for the Second Stitch
Next, bring the top needle over the yarn on thumb, making a loop on the top needle.
Step 4: Continue Alternating
Continue alternating until you have the desired number of stitches.
Tip: Each wrap around both needles counts as two stitches total (one on each needle). Be sure to end with a stitch on the bottom needle so there is an even number of stitches.
Step 5: Ready to Knit in the Round
Once you’ve cast on all your stitches:
Turn your needles so the needle points are facing to the right.
- Twist the working yarn and tail so that it secures the last stitch.
Begin knitting into the top needle stitches first, then the bottom. Knit 5 stitches normally.
You now have two rows of live stitches and can begin knitting in the round!
Step 6: Knit the Remaining Stitches through the Back Loop
The remaining stitches on needle two are mounted wrong on the needle.
To fix that, knit through the back loop (tbl), which will fix it.
Step 7: Continue Following the Pattern as Indicated
And that’s it! You have successfully done Judy’s Magic Cast On.
