With its two I-cord tie closures, the bag offers a playful hint to the other witch. When you display the pink side, the I-cord closure reveals a pop of lime green, and when you switch to the lime green side, the I-cord shows a bit of pink. The combination of these vibrant colors instantly evokes the magic of Wicked, and I wanted to incorporate both pink and green on each side for that perfect balance.
The colorwork sections come with its own chart, so you can easily track your individual progress through the online digital tracker!
And with some crochet techniques I have learned over the years, you’ll be able to create a crochet bag base with no holes, and create this sturdy purse with no seaming using the join as you go method!
You’ll be able to learn these two techniques with video and picture aids I have included below.
DESCRIPTION
The Gravity Bag is an intermediate crochet pattern that includes 3 video aids to help aid you in crocheting this fun, colorful bag.
Inspired by the musical/movie Wicked, the front of the Gravity Bag is a crown with a bright pink backdrop for Glinda (or Gah-linda lol) and the back is a witch hat with lime green yarn for Elphaba.
You can choose “witch” side to wear out depending on your mood.
I personally love Elphaba, so I would probably wear the green side out more, but the bright pink sure is a fun Glinda-inspired design!
The Front/Base/Back/Sides are made in one piece, so there is no seaming for this project!
The sides are made using flo/blo to give that sharp edge I wanted for this bag. They are crocheted vertical to the bag, and then they are slip stitched to join along the base in the “join as you go” method. I have picture tutorials to help you if you are unfamiliar with how to do this technique.
Sturdy waistcoat stitch is used for the strap for a clean and polished look that will not stretch out.
And the icords for the closures at the top of the bag are a fun contrasting pink/lime green to showcase the Glinda/Elphaba color when showing the Front/Back.

YARN
The Gravity Bag is made using Lion Brand Lazy Days yarn.
I used the colorways “Sorbet“, “Licorice“, “Matcha“, and “Marshmallow” because Sorbet and Matcha match Glinda and Elphaba’s shades so well.
Lion Brand Lazy Days yarn is machine washable and dryable, and is 100% polyester. Polyester yarn is very durable, which is what I wanted in this bag. It washes well and dries fast.
Lazy Days Yarn is a tubular yarn, so it doesn’t stretch out like some polyester yarn can. And I chose to use single crochet and waistcoat stitch throughout the bag design – to ensure a strong, sturdy bag that would not stretch out over time.
I also chose a hook that is smaller than what you may typically use, so there’s a tight tension with this bag, which is also good for crochet colorwork!
There’s 3.5 oz or 179 yards per skein, so I had a good amount of green and pink left over. Would be cute to add a Witch keychain or pink/green tassels to use up some of the extra yarn!

DIFFICULTY
The Gravity Bag is considered a Level 3 – Intermediate crochete pattern.
Single Crochet + Waistcoat Stitch is used through the majority of the pattern, and I have a video to show you how to do the Waistcoat stitch. The waistcoat stitch is very thick and sturdy, so I love to use it for bags.
I also have a No Gap Method that I like to use for the base of bags so that it doesn’t create the holes when you’re working the other side of the beginning chains.

The two colorwork sections use intarsia crochet techniques, so that’s why it is rated as an intermediate pattern.
If you know how to change colors mid row, you should be able to do this pattern.

And last video aid I have for this pattern is for the icord closures. Have you ever heard of Half Icords?
They are made so much quicker than a traditional crochet icord and are much easier in my opinion!

- 160 yds or 1 ball of Lion Brand Yarn Lazy Days, “Licorice” (144-153C), weight 4, 100% polyester, 3.5 oz/100 g, 179 yds/164 m (A)
- 55 yds or 1 ball of Lion Brand Yarn Lazy Days, “Sorbet” (144-103AG), weight 4, 100% polyester, 3.5 oz/100 g, 179 yds/164 m (B)
- 140 yds or 1 ball of Lion Brand Yarn Lazy Days, “Marshmallow” (144-100k), weight 4, 100% polyester, 3.5 oz/100 g, 179 yds/164 m (C)
- 55 yds or 1 ball of Lion Brand Yarn Lazy Days, “Matcha” (144-172AJ), weight 4, 100% polyester, 3.5 oz/100 g, 179 yds/164 m (D)

NOTES
- Create bobbins of colors to crochet the Front/Crown and Back/Witch Hat using intarsia crochet techniques.
- Each row of the chart alternates between right to left/left to right. The right-hand side of the chart has odd numbers (RS) and the left-hand side has even numbers (WS).
- You will be making this from bottom up.
- Every block of the chart represents 1 sc and is notated by the color followed by how many sc to do. Example: B2 means sc 2 with B.
- The ch 1 does not count as a st.
- You need to be familiar with how to change colors using the “yarn under technique”. If unsure how to do so, see this blog post for further explanation.
- The Sides are made along the row edges of Front/Back and joined to the Base at the end of rows.
- Left-handed crocheters reverse right/left throughout pattern.
SPECIAL STITCHES/TECHNIQUES
No Gap in Base – Insert hook in ch by going under the first lp and the back bar
Waistcoat Stitch (wc) – Insert hook in between the posts of st, yo, pull up a lp, yo, pull through both lps on hook
Half Icord (Double Chain) – Leaving a tail 3x the length you want the icord, make a slip knot, *yarn under the tail end, yarn over the main yarn strand, and pull through. Rep from * until desired length. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail end. Draw the tail end through all three loops on the hook and pull tight to fasten off.

Row 1 (RS): Using No Gap Method, sc 1 in 2nd ch from hook, sc 1 across, turn (36 sts)

Row 3: ch 1, skipping the sl sts, wc 1 across, turn

Rows 5-25: rep Rows 3-4, ending with a rep of Row 3
With RS facing, using the optional sewing clips, insert hook in top of Back, draw lp through, ch 1, working through Side and Back, sc down edges. Fasten off.
With WS facing up, rep for the other Side by inserting hook in Front and working evenly up edge. Work Row 2 as blo.
With RS facing up, working through both thicknesses and using the optional sewing clips, sc down edges.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
TOP
With RS facing up, using C, sl st to join in top left of a Side,
Rnd 1 (RS): ch 1, sc 36 across each Front/Back and sc 14 evenly spaced across each Side. Place a st marker on st 39 and 97, sl st to join (100 sts)
Rnd 2: ch 1, wc 1 around, sl st to join
Fasten off C.
STRAP
With RS facing up, using A, sl st to join in first marker,
Row 1 (RS): ch 1, wc2tog, wc 5, wc2tog, turn (7 sts)
Row 2: ch 1, wc 1 across until last st, turn
Row 3: ch 1, wc2tog, wc 3, wc2tog, turn (5 sts)
Rows 4-181: ch 1, wc 1 across until last st, turn
Row 182: ch 1, wc 2 in same st, wc 1 across until last st, wc 2 in same st, turn (7 sts)
Row 183: ch 1, wc across, sc in last st, turn
Row 184: ch 1, wc 2 in same st, wc 1 across until last st, wc 2 in same st, turn (9 sts)
With RS facing up and being careful not to twist Strap, sl st 9 by inserting hook into Strap and Top, starting with post of second marker on opposite Side.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
HALF ICORDS (Double Chains)
Using B,
- Without cutting, measure 3x the length you want your icord (about 27”) and make a slip knot.
- Wrap the tail of the slip knot in front of the hook and up and over the hook, yo, pull through both lps.
- Rep step 2 until desired length or 45 rows.
Weave in all ends. Sew to Top of Front.
Rep with D. Sew to Top of Back.
And that’s how you make the Gravity Bag!
